Look if you tried to remove the actual chattel slavery from the story and you try to imaginatively transpose George Washington into who he would be in 2021 he's a dickhead billionaire Absurdly rich celebrity who shamelessly bought a path to glory and power Not a good dudehttps://twitter.com/owillis/status/1359185622007771137 …

every time republicans say something like "oh so should we ban george washington because he owned slaves?" i think, while i dont realistically argue for excising washington from us life, we should nationally talk about the fact the "father" of our country owned a ton of people. pic.twitter.com/xfJoNPf3Yh

And yeah I'll say it, his performance in the war was wildly overrated They turned him into a strategic genius in the history books because they needed the story to be about how badass American troops were and not France using us as a pawn in their power struggle with Britain

my hot take on washington is that the most important thing he ever did was not run for a third term giving away the sword, as in the 1841 statuepic.twitter.com/nHTap9vDhc

turns out a lot of post-colonial revolutions involved charismatic strongmen ruling for decades and basically subverting whatever formal democracy their revolution put in place so uh i'm glad we avoided that outcome mostly because old george got tired of being prez

Yeah but I mean It really was mostly because he personally hated being president He liked glory more than power, especially when power meant having to go to meetings and do work

There's a story about how the Constitution says the President makes appointments "with the advice and consent of the Senate" so when he started out he held a session of the Senate for people to weigh in on his Cabinet picks

He hated the experience so much he said he never wanted to see or hear any of that pack of scoundrels again for the rest of his life Washington never attended another congressional session as President, and now "advice and consent" just means "consent"
