A cat or other predator killed one of my mourning dove friends. Its bloody remains are exploded across my fire escape. The one bright spot of quarantine was getting to see these beautiful birds every day, and now they'll never come back.

I loved that they weren't scared of me, and I made sure never to make any sudden movements to frighten them. I loved that they felt nice and safe near me, during a time when I can't make anything safe for anyone. But they weren't safe and I'll never see them again.

It's this whole thing Yes, nature is red in tooth and claw, but cats are unfair competitors, they tip the balance They're subsidized predators Hunting's not a challenge for them, they don't fail repeatedly and death spiral into starvation like real predators do

They eat a nice big breakfast of kibble or canned tuna every morning and they go out all hale and hearty to bag a dove and then just wastefully leave it there because they've had their entertainment Like a fuzzy little Eric Trump
