"America the Beautiful" is just a better song on every level than "The Star-Spangled Banner" and should've replaced it as the anthem a century ago

And it encourages the people we get who do have training to sing it to embroider it with all these flourishes and show off and shit It's just musically disastrous

Someone (I can't remember who, sorry) put the Star-Spangled in a much, MUCH lower key so that when you reached the infamously high "Free" it's actually paired with a note within the range of almost every persons singing voice. He was branded as a communist for the effort.

I was looking for information on this [couldn't find any specifically about anyone being branded as a communist] and discovered something more interesting: its official status as the anthem rests in part on a performance that was done in a lower key:https://www.gettysburgflag.com/blog/elsie-reilley-saved-anthem-star-spangled-banner/ …

An octave and a fifth, if I've got that right. Which is the sort of range you expect people to have in a choir or something else where you're scoring SATB, but not for a bunch of randoms singing in a stadium.
-
(By comparison, the range required for God Save The Queen is a minor seventh.)

Well, it was a drinking song. It is singable by those who are either very talented or very drunk.

The old Soviet anthem (which is now the Russian anthem, but it has fewer bits about Lenin) is an excellent one for singing in general. They tried to change it after the USSR collapsed; the one they picked by Glinka was so miserable they gave in and just revised the old one.
