Nothing in the world could be healthier for our failing democracy than for the Republicans to vanish and the Democrats to split into the two - or more - parties they obviously actually are

Because if we don't have two irrational extremes and the wiser, smarter middle moderating them, then centrism isn't enlightenment, just cowardice.
-
The middle is so far from the median at this point... the right has a long way to walk before they get near the center.

I keep seeing people talking about how obvs the dems want a one party state, and they're all suspect enough accounts that I don't take them seriously, but it'd probably be useful to bookmark a "how come the GOP in itself isn't decreed a perpetual place in politics" thing.

Personally, I worry that something like the GOP is inevitable. Even if the Republican party disappeared tomorrow along with all its politicians, the desire for a party that's racist and sexist and generally shitty would still be there.
-
While I do think it would probably be better if the Democratic party split up, I also worry that would eventually led to whatever the offshoot would be trending to the right to appeal to the Q demographic. The only fix I can imagine would be crafting a multi-party system.

If they really want competition between parties, crush the GOP, go parliament and let the Dems all divorce each other and form their own more focused parties.
