**begins tearing out hair** if we accept that force power is passed down through bloodlines, and then the jedi aren't allowed to have children, AND the jedi collect all force-sensitive kids and make them jedi, doesn't this entail that they're breeding the force out of the galaxy?

That's a feature, not a bug In the big picture the Jedi serve the social function of being "containment" for Force users, their overall job is to minimize the effect the Force has on ordinary people's daily life

this feels like the big reveal at the end of a book 1 of an expanded universe trilogy, where we discover the heroes' light-side mentor is actually the villain and he wants to eliminate all knowledge of the force from the galaxy, for order

Well I mean to me Star Wars just generally makes more sense with the backstory from KotOR The galaxy was once ruled by tyrannical Dark Side Force users (the Rakatan Empire) whose cruelty and tyranny was boundless, and whose inevitable collapse led to even more suffering

The ancient origins of the Jedi Order were an attempt to try to make sure this never happened again The purpose of Jedi Knights is to be a neutered version of Sith Lords who *take the place the Sith would have* in an earlier society

The whole Jedi concept of "Light Side" and "Dark Side" is the ancient Jedi trying to identify all the psychological factors that led to the old magocracy going mad with power and purge them from themselves Like how the rebels against the Hand in Marvel are carried "the Chaste"

Like how Pratchett describes magic as like nukes in Discworld The purpose of Unseen University is to create a monopoly on wizard magic, put it all in one place, and then lock it up and not use it

Cf. the idea that the original Jedi planet and the original Jedi texts are in this inaccessible nowhere place on purpose, the original Jedi founders were trying to protect the world from themselves

Interesting discussion would be whether or not that's practical or wise, since canonically the Force is an active instigative impetus throughout the universe and history, and it purposefully gives rise to antithesis when the jedi predominate or things become stagnant.

I was so hype for this to be the actual meaning of the subtitle of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens But like so much else from that movie the exciting hints weren't really followed up on

But yes I definitely consider this part of the subtext of why Luke thinks the Jedi Order isn't worth bringing back in TLJ ("To call the Jedi the same as the Light is vanity") and the reveal with the Broom Kid in the ending

It’s why in my opinion TLJ is the only sequel that actually engages with the rest of the series, instead of being an “…and then, and then…” add-on. Johnston specifically countered the idea of Star Wars being the story of one dynasty of force-users with Rey and the stable-boy.

I do find it delicious that even with that, Rey is arguing, by and large, for the more orthodox, old notions of the force and that structure of the universe you could link to the skywalker bloodline, while kylo, the literal blood scion of that lineage, is trying to tear it down
