I guess I'll be that guy and point out this actually is what the word "celibate" is supposed to mean, and not having sex at all is the word "chaste"https://twitter.com/SWTweets/status/1357859074512089088 …

If a Catholic priest "slips" and has sex with somebody that's bad but it's not career ending (sadly, we've learned this is true even of cases of child rape) It doesn't rise to the level of fully breaking his vows and getting defrocked until he gets into a serious LTR

(Technically the actual definition of "celibacy" is actually getting married, but it's a spectrum)

This makes sense when you realise that the rule that requires Roman Catholic priests to be celibate is an administrative rule intended to prevent Church offices from being passed down in families, and nothing to do with religious purity (unlike celibacy for monks)

Yeah I mean in-universe I feel like this is obviously the Jedi both wanting their members to have only one loyalty, to the Jedi Order, and to avoid the idea of "Jedi dynasties" within families Which all makes sense, especially with their history as an anti-Sith army

The Jedi are a lot like the Catholic Church and a lot like the Confician civil service in that they're institutions set up to compete with/replace a traditional family aristocracy and try not to become one themselves

That might have been the idea, but several aristocratic families in Italy used the Catholic church to promote their interests for centuries, purchasing positions, political intrigues, living like Cardinal princes. Many great fortunes were made managing the Papacy's wealth.

Aristocratic families are traditional because they keep reinstating themselves no matter how hard you try Having a relative in the Confucian civil service became as good as a title of nobility in ancient China, too, despite all the official rules prohibiting it

Hell they even took the old word for "knight" and just made it the word for "scholar" ("shi")

I mean the American revolutionaries supposedly hated the whole concept of dynastic aristocracy and tried to ban noble titles and whatnot You tell me if being a Senator has nothing to do with who your parents are and confers no benefits on your children
