You're not wrong, but the shorter expiration time on patents, and the high cost of getting one is probably why there's not as much attention focused on them. It's one thing to have to wait 15-20 years, it's another to have to wait a century.

Yeah but people have a good point that not every game mechanic is something that will stay relevant across tech advantages over those 15-20 years. The loading screen minigame patent meant that no games during the PS2 and most of the PS3 era could do that.

Most patents are trash. It’s almost always the case any practitioner of the art would find the same solution being patented. I have 20+ issued patents in various technologies and maybe 2-3 should have issued. It’s a disaster for innovation.
