Also "cures" based on this Skinner box idea of "do whatever makes the brain scan go back to normal" are always Band-Aid cures These scans treat the brain like a black box and tell you nothing about the underlying processes, it's not the science fiction thing they pretend it is https://t.co/UCCJs8OAnE

(Seriously though it's kind of shocking how if you read old books from the 60s and 70s how normalized housewives taking "pep pills" and "tranquilizers" to manage their energy levels was And how the fallout from what quaaludes actually do led to them being banned)

Look I'm extremely pro-pharma and pro-taking whatever chemicals, licit or illicit, you need to make it through the day and live your life But don't delude yourself about what you're doing when you're doing it

The idea that the brain has a "normal" state that you can "break the spell" and snap back into once you remove the toxic external influence is a strong irrational bias people have about psychology Sometimes it makes people too anti-drug and sometimes it makes them too pro-drug

Mood-altering drugs are a blunt instrument like back when censorship filters tried to block porn by just blocking images showing too much human skin tone

A photo of two naked people having sex doesn't become not-porn if you slap a Photoshop filter on it to make them green You don't stop actually hating your abusive dad because they gave you beta blockers that let you stop thinking about it all the time

The overreliance on Skinner Box-esque mechanisms are one of the bigger flaws in modern psychological treatment, but it's one that is pretty easy to see how it all got to that being the case instead of more thorough treatments... Really ever.

I don't think the doctors really cared about "hysterical" women, they just wanted the lady work done without complaint. They also don't care about trans people. I've come to believe that psychology is designed for the comfort of society, not the individual
