You haven't even actually read the book you name-drop in this tweet you dumb Nazi fuckface

Depends on the book! Some of them are pretty cool and exciting, and some of them are beautiful, but a lot of them are boring as shit. Even i haven't made it through every single one (i skipped a bunch of the really dull ones)

The Gideons (or some Catholic equivalent thereof) came to my school at some point when I was 12 or 13 and handed us bibles. The Old Testament is a page turner, but once Jesus shows up the momentum goes to shit and you're just like "ugh, this is the same story again".

I read the Bible straight through one summer at my grandparents house in Tulsa. More as a completionist achievement than anything else, but it comes in handy.
-
Honestly, the surprising thing about the Bible is that it's often thoughtful, equivocal, and even profound. You just have to actually read it.

The primary way evangelicals "read" the Bible, as prooftexts in fortune-cookie snippet form, is such total utter bullshit It's the most disrespectful thing you can do to any text, much less a "sacred" one
-
Yeah, and if they actually read it they might notice that Jesus was Jewish, which seems to have completely escaped their notice.

I have to admit I rarely attend torah services, but when I realized that christians don't have the equivalent- reading the entirety of the original (even in translation) text of their scriptures in church service - I was gobsmacked. (Maybe some do? idk.)
-
I mean a lot of brainy/nerdy evangelical Christians do hold this up as an ideal and later in life I met some very devoted Christians who did in fact make a point of reading the full text of the Bible every year (and said Jewish practice inspired them to do so)
