My grandma was Chinese Indonesian and my grandpa Dutch. Putting another weird wrinkle on it, both were Christians in a primarily Muslim country. Oma's family definitely dealt with its share of anti-Chinese violence, but I think they also had a certain sense of superiority.

Opa definitely had the colonial mindset. And Oma's family has a story of a (Muslim) mob coming to burn down the family's house and flour factory, but seeing a candle in a window and mistaking it for a holy flame and running away. I don't care for the implications.
