"Cat got your tongue?" is a weird idiom because in my many tongue-based interactions with cats it has always been me who is much closer to getting their tongues

Huh. Not much info on the origin of that either, just the usual poorly thought out folk stories. (Ancient Egypt? No, that’s absurd.)

I always thought it was derived from the idea of cats "stealing your breath" (Which, if you've ever woken up with a cat on you, is completely logical)
