Hell a lot of common fish names were created this way Slightly-more-scrupulous restaurateurs invented the name "Chilean sea bass" to make it sound better that they were replacing bass in recipes with what had previously been known as "Patagonian toothfish"

I remember reading a thing that a ridiculous percentage of sushi is really escolar, or “snake mackerel” dyed different colors. It’s mildly toxic but most people chalk it up to food poisoning if they eat enough to make them sick.

Yeah and the "wasabi" you get at almost all cheap sushi joints in the States isn't actually wasabi at all, it's just regular horseradish + green food coloring
