Hell a lot of common fish names were created this way Slightly-more-scrupulous restaurateurs invented the name "Chilean sea bass" to make it sound better that they were replacing bass in recipes with what had previously been known as "Patagonian toothfish"

My favorite example of this is how Escolar is a common sleight-of-hand for white tuna, but since the fat in escolar is made up of wax esters, if you eat too much of it (which is not very much) you get "explosive oily diarrhea" since your body doesn't *like* gempylotoxin.
