God I hate that I know what you’re talking about and have a counter point. OK, no I don’t.

you don't have a counterpoint?

Yeah, that was unclear, sorry. My counter point was that the existence of rarified tastes and their association with the Ventrue implies that Ventrue either have a way to shift their preferences over time OR actively cultivate and preserve the type of people they prey upon 1/2

Meaning that if you choose say reactionaries or Vietnam vets you’re eventually going to have to actively cultivate that heard. In the case of reactionaries not so hard but in the vets case use your political power to insure there is always a conflict in Vietnam every few decades

It is fairly rare for vampires to actually live that much longer than a century or so (the VtM setting is a pretty brutally Darwinian one for most Kindred) and it's been established via the backstory of certain NPCs that Ventrue tastes do shift over time as circumstances change

The rule given is that the Ventrue feeding preference not be changeable *during the course of a game*, which is logical enough If something drastic happens during the game that makes it impossible to feed (all 7th-Day Adventists get Raptured), what happens is ST discretion

Basically from an in-universe POV the Ventrue feeding restriction results from some kind of psychological hangup from the Ventrue's backstory when they were alive So it's more flexible than a rules literalist would have it but less than a powergamer would want

I.e. it cannot be *voluntarily* relinquished or arbitrarily changed for convenience, it's core to the Ventrue's sense of self And Ventrue Embraces aren't "game-balanced" and in-universe it's not uncommon for a Ventrue to be born with an "impossible" Bane that quickly kills them

Like the Revised Clanbook talks about the ugly reality of movie-Dracula-style "romances" where a Ventrue was so obsessed with a particular person in life they can only feed off of that person, and if that person dies they're just fucked

But yes if a Ventrue survives long enough and gains enough detachment from their original life due to their immortality they're able to "adapt" *Eventually* they evolve to the point where they can see past the surface level of their compulsion, but the psychological core remains
