Hari Kondabolu's documentary about Apu on the Simpsons has an interview with Goldberg where they tour her collection of blackface/minstrelsy memorabilia, which is quite extensive She talks a fair bit about her mixed feelings about owning all this stuff

That, you know, purchasing and collecting this stuff is a way to gain power over it

YMMV though Like... Ted Danson was dating her when he got in huge, almost career-ending trouble for showing up in blackface to her Friars Club roast in 1993, a skit it turns out she came up with and urged him to do

It's a real trip reading about it today - and 1993 was not really a "more innocent time" where this stuff was okay Montel Williams was furious over ithttps://apnews.com/article/59a857fd2b10063314283c524f8a851c …

This is one of the pieces of comedy history that has been most successfully buried by both Danson and Goldberg, such that it is one of the few Friars Club roasts where no video footage was ever leaked and in fact was probably destroyedhttps://lostmediaarchive.fandom.com/wiki/Ted_Danson_Blackface_Performance_at_Whoopi_Goldberg%27s_Roast_(1993) …

honestly Goldberg could probably weather it even if the roast had been aired memory holing it when people didn't cotton onto the interior context of the skit and laugh along with them was probably more necessary for Danson's sake

Montel Williams was completely correct that whatever Danson and Goldberg thought was funny in the privacy of their own home didn't need to be paraded in front of a bunch of other Black celebrities including the mayor of New York

Yeah even if you think of a roast as being a birthday party of sorts, or like a comedian's quinceañera, the second local politicians show up it's probably safe to say that it's not all about you

Didnt Whoopi also, you know, Dolezal herself a fake Jewish heritage because she thought it would help her career?

I think that was kind of a joke, based on the fact that very few people would actually believe a Black woman was Jewish

Well, Whoopi is much more darker than all of them, the stereotype is that Black Jews all look like Lenny Kravitz
