Sixty pages? Where was the editor?
-
Fuming in the corner because they'd spent ages trying to convince Rand to remove it. Seriously.

Putting a giant speech like that in a book is a complete and utter failure of book-writing on a truly catastrophic scale. At least the whale lectures Herman Melville put in Moby Dick weren't actually *part of the story*.
-
The only thing I've ever read that comes remotely close to that level of fail is how LaHaye and JBJ cut and pasted Baby's First Bible Stories into the Left Behind sequel, and even that's sort of justifiable because Celestial Daycare isn't enough to fill a novel length book.

AND THE WHOLE ROOM OF IMPORTANT PEOPLE ARE JUST STANDING WITH THEIR MOUTHS OPEN. I mean I can understand Dagny pretending to be a mannequin, she spent the whole book doing that, why change now. But there's military people and the arguable Leader of the Free World!

I always imagine V at the beginning of V for Vendetta when he takes over the airwaves, and what if that was the entire god damn movie, and people getting bored and just turning off the TV halfway through
-
It's amazing how many of these revolutionary fantasies involve somebody taking over the airwaves. There's this assumption that people care, and it's access that's the problem. "If I just scream loud enough, people will hear me and believe as a matter of course."

Here’s the very truncated version from the very bad film adaptation, minus awed reaction from Sean Hannity and other real-life pundits at the end.https://youtu.be/VJkVmPc707c

The movies deserve their own MST3K sporking. They really do.
