It would've been better had he been part of a gang or an organized crime syndicate It would've meant he was capable of giving a shit about other people and working in some kind of team, at the very least

His solo kidnapping plot was not only completely devoid of any of these "virtues of the vicious", honor and loyalty among thieves It was also incredibly stupid and doomed to fail for that very reason

The most astonishing thing about Rand's praise for Hickman's "intelligence" is it was based on nothing, entirely circular The evidence is the biggest thing he did in life was something anyone could see was not only reprehensible but a total dumbass move

But she read genius into an impulsive reckless fool's atrocities *because they were atrocities* It was simply the fact of how vile he was that made him "special" He never once demonstrated any ability to do what others could not, only what they would not, which she conflated

For almost any normal person, including fans of mafia movies or heist movies or the like, there's nothing to admire about someone like Hickman He wasn't even a *successful* bad guy like a Scarface or an actual serial killer, he wasn't even *smart*

It takes a hugely distorted perspective to read "genius" into kidnapping a little girl because her parents trusted you and then killing her and delivering her body to her parents when collecting her ransom - *that they were willing to pay* - because you're just quirky that way

Huh. This REALLY bothers you doesn’t it. Something tells me 23 year old Ayn Rand would be rather pleased that she has co completely got your goat. But, if you read the passage, she agreed with you, saying she was probably wrongly idealizing him in her, once again, private journal

"Ho ho ho, I got you, I got you, successfully trolled" Yes It's deeply fucked up and it should bother anyone who hears about it

The worst thing about that passage is, in fact, Rand's contempt and fury at what, if she were on the Internet today, she'd call "virtue signaling" Her rage at all the people "piling" on to call Hickman a sick twisted fuck That normal people were proud of being normal

It’s not really a passage. It’s a journal entry. I think you need to put this in perspective before blow a blood vessel. Let me ask you this: If you never knew she wrote this in her journal when she was 23, alone and starving in Hollywood, would you feel the same about her?

Uh yeah This isn't actually that well known a fact about Rand, most of whose haters hate her over her published work and what she actually did with her life It's just a particularly shocking fact once you do learn it

I learned about this from this thread. It’s absolutely not the main thing people dislike her for.
