"Yes, he is a monster – now. But the worse he is, the worst must be the cause that drove him to this. Isn’t it significant that a society was not able to fill the life of an exceptional, intelligent boy, to give him anything to out-balance crime in his eyes?"

There's a sense where the most boring things to some people are the most obvious; "don't murder children" for example. So there's a perverse need to show that you aren't bound by those rules.

To some extent, it's a healthy part of being a teenager and growing up (which is why Rand is popular among teens!) You show that the rules are, in a sense, optional by defying them, so you can rebuild from there what you actually care about.

There's a segment of the world that sees violence arise from boredom and assumes that means boredom is the pathological component. Even more unfortunately, additional people then decide that idea must be insightful without being bothered to think it through.

Rand uses the same logic that some judges use to excuse white men for their terrible acts. "he was smart and had potential"

It was a fairly common POV among intellectuals in the early 20th century. Social Darwinism, Eugenics, even widespread euthanasia were acceptable ideas. Not excusing Ayn Rand, but I don’t think her opinions would be respected by the mainstream today.

It's almost always extremely lazy and silly to blame a piece of art for inspiring people to do bad things... but a disturbing number of people who did very bad things sure did love Natural Born Killers (great song though!)
