I really don't get the sociologist hot takes on lower birth rates. "there won't be enough children to take care of the elderly in the next generation!" Have you considered that other parts of the world have excess young population, and you could encourage immigration from there?

And maybe some people are waiting to be able to have the kind of baby-having experience they're used to-- baby shower, hospital visitors, etc.

"Have a kid with *zero* social support because you can't risk getting Covid! Post-partum depression with no active social or family support isn't that bad, you can just power your way through it!" There's so many messed up assumptions in that article.

Also, no one wants to go into the hospital right now if they can help it.

I heard the term Birth Strike pre-pandemic. Many people are having fewer/no kids because they lack social and economic support before, during, and after pregnancy. Seeing how quickly the few supports that do exist fall away in a crisis doesn’t make the idea any more tempting.

Not to mention the whole "realizing you have one and you might suddenly be on your own without a 'village' or even a school or day care for a year or more."

It kinda sucks to say it’s an obviously stupid idea to have a kid right now. Many of us were trying before the pandemic and/or have fertility issues that make waiting a risky choice. We’re mostly not happy about it but we’re not necessarily stupid for deciding to go ahead anyway.
