I am seeing he was a Trotskyist with anarchist sympathies who was very bitter the people he fought with in the Spanish Civil War got demonized as evil terrorists by "both sides" after the fascists won

firstly, he was a democratic socialist, who sympathised with Trotsky due to his anti-Stalinism. he was a supporter of anarchism, he wrote a book applauding the Catalonian Anarchists for their successes, and was dismayed by the fact they were betrayed by the Stalinists.

dude wrote a whole book about how Stalinism is bad - Animal Farm. he wasn't bitter, he was a committed anti-authoritarian. and for good reason. 1984 is an extension of that point - and further critiques the nature of authoritarianism as requiring consent from the people.
