So something I'm going to mention. D&D orcs are coded as PoC Savages because D&D was written by a very conservative racist guy deliberately trying to mimic the (very racist) clash-of-civilization-vs-barbarism dynamic of Conan. Tolkien orcs are *abberrations* in D&D terms.

Well, sure. I just don't know if we're not supposed to see these cultures as having engaged in Industry, as well, given the sheer scope of their labors. But that's also more detail than LOTR really gives to the economies of either side's logistics, imo.

Like what defines Sauron and Morgoth isn't really a greater scope of production (well ok, Morgoth works on a far grander scale, but he's also basically a God) but rather their total indifference to sustainability AND human comfort or flourishing in the pursuit of production.

As we now understand it sure, but it's why the term "cottage industry" exists. More importantly, it's how English people in Tolkien's timeframe understood it, while he was writing the books.
