So something I'm going to mention. D&D orcs are coded as PoC Savages because D&D was written by a very conservative racist guy deliberately trying to mimic the (very racist) clash-of-civilization-vs-barbarism dynamic of Conan. Tolkien orcs are *abberrations* in D&D terms.

Warcraft zeroed in on the idea of Goblins being clever manipulators and inventors, which unfortunately made them a blatantly antisemitic stereotype

Yeah, they danced around it, but I think by WoW, they had kind of come out the other side; mad scientists with little concern for their own safety is further away from the tropes.

Well it only really contradicts itself in the context of D&D! LOTR orcs are *extremely* technologically sophisticated, and have excellent medicine, a highly regimented chain of command and a rigorously artificial imperial structure!

The whole "orcs as symbols of the Barbarian Landscape to be displaced by Civilization" dynamic was something basically pushed by D&D - because Gygax wanted to do Conan-style "civilizing races pushing out their supposedly debased predecessors". It was NOT a part of the original!
