I still think the Cobra Kai philosophy makes more sense if you strip the toxic masculinity (which the show slowly does) than the Miyagi-do philosophy. Life has screwed me over and over again and I'm not ready to play by the rules and let it keep screwing me

Does Miyagi-do play by the rules? Granted I haven't watched the series, but as presented in the movies that's not really the vibe I got from it. Miyagi himself seems very much a "follow your own path" kind of guy.

They're hypocrites, like the Jedi, but they say they play by the rules

As I've pointed out many times, a head kick is enormously dangerous and sweeping the leg is a simple judo move I know IRL and can still use after almost 15 years, but it's all about optics I guess

Sweeping the leg knowing that another fighter got disqualified so that it would be a weak point for you to exploit is kind of a no-no though. Especially in the rugged 80's individualism paradigm, where teamwork is for villains. And also fails.

It's a whole thing where attacking someone on their pre-existing injury da absolutely what you would do in a real life-or-death struggle - it's the whole basis of what "tactics" even means - but in a competitive situation makes you look like a huge prick

It's extra weird because it required two people to cheat in a row, and if it hadn't been successful on the first attempt wouldn't he have been disqualified anyway?

A deliberate hit below the belt isn't enough for a DQ, just losing a point Johnny's teammate gets DQed for an obvious intent to injure

That's what Johnny says when he says Danny won by an "illegal kick" and Danny points out he swept the leg first "Yeah, so mine lost me the point and yours won you the tournament"
