I still think the Cobra Kai philosophy makes more sense if you strip the toxic masculinity (which the show slowly does) than the Miyagi-do philosophy. Life has screwed me over and over again and I'm not ready to play by the rules and let it keep screwing me

The “defense only” mindset is flawed in the sense that learning a combat skill only to never use it is counter-intuitive to why we would seek such training in the first place. See also, the Jedi.

The parallels with Star Wars are 1:1 except that Cobra Kai adherents are just more likely to be dicks, instead of magic rage monsters for no reason

The problem with the Jedi (and Myagi-do) is that it’s not a philosophy for the masses. Those that can live by it are always going to be few. Being a monk is a serious undertaking.

I think the show does a really good job, esp in season 2, of showing that while the senseis of Cobra Kai may pitch it as "don't wait for participation trophies, life shouldn't cut you breaks," the students are people who never got trophies or breaks from life, hence the appeal

Kreis in particular has internalized that life *should* be rough, but the students just know that it *is*

What’s interesting is that those that do get participation trophies have no interest in Cobra Kai. On the other hand, Myagi-Do will appeal to them, because conflict can threaten their status, so avoiding becomes paramount.

Yes It's a huge huge issue that having one of your top values being avoiding conflict means you're also going to be avoiding change It's much easier to be a pacifist when you're conservative and it's easier to be conservative when you're rich
