Anyway they put a big warning thing on the bleach bottle over and over again "DON'T MIX THIS WITH ANYTHING ELSE" but someone working in a kitchen still dies of this shit somewhere every six months

Sorry, maybe I'm missing something: aren't "chlorine" and "bleach" the same thing?pic.twitter.com/KyjlVJIcdu

Just for the record, the main things to worry about mixing with bleach are: 1) Any kind of acid, which makes chlorine gas 2) Ammonia, which makes chloramine gas 3) Alcohol (ethyl or isopropyl), which makes gaseous chloroform

Making "mustard gas" with bleach is a joke from King of the Hill that isn't really accurate ("mustard gas" is a term for a sulfur-containing compound from WWI that was quite a bit more difficult to invent and expensive to make than just mixing bleach with anything)

But, you know, mixing bleach with shit is dangerous enough that it's better to err on the side of exaggerating the threat than downplaying it

(Acid + bleach is especially bad, since the acid/base neutralization reaction itself is extremely dangerous -- it gets boiling hot and releases gas rapidly enough to potentially explode -- even ignoring that the chlorine waste product is toxic)

(And a lot of people don't realize that, say, commercial drain cleaner you get from Home Depot can in fact contain very strong acid -- sulfuric or hydrochloric acid And *other* drain cleaners clean the drain using strong alkali like bleach, or lye)

Thanks for giving me nightmares about my very real fear of forgetting not to do this.

I'm just gonna avoid clearing drains for the rest of my life.

If the first attempt doesn't work then it's really best to just call a plumber to snake it

I'm cheap enough I probably wouldn't splurge on buying more than one cleaner anyways.
