Also the President is not in fact supposed to salute members of the military THEY salute HIM, since as the commander-in-chief he's their CO, and then as the superior officer he can choose to return their salute or nothttps://twitter.com/daveweigel/status/1352355934803136514 …

I can't remember if I ever even saluted COs when they were in street clothes.

I've been told that doing so is an actual major faux pas, like as a practical matter out in the civilian world it means you're blowing up their spot and drawing attention etc. they may not want Like the rule you don't salute officers in actual combat zones, but sort of reversed

right, right Yeah it's not especially common when you're in uniform and the CO isn't (generally it means they stopped back at work to grab something or do something pretty informal) but I certainly was never admonished for it

Oh sorry yeah if you're on duty and they're just coming by the base in street clothes I think it's different than if you're both off duty and going to the store or whatever

My only personal experience with this was the dude who joined the Army Rangers after high school coming back to give a talk to our class about his experiences and him being all twitchy and triggered by people saluting him

Like when he came in in his dress uniform some dude was like "Atten-SHUN!" and saluted him and he was like "DON'T fucking do that" and the dude was like "Hey it's just a joke man" and he's like "NOT even as a joke"

I gotta say I didn't know him that well but he sure didn't really seem happy or okay It wasn't this performative Marine "Don't you disrespect the tradition!" thing, it was like people breaking military protocol actually triggered him

I feel like a lot of people who don't take to military life find it stressful that they've been programmed with all these rules that just don't make any sense in the outside world and that it's a pain in the ass to explain to civilians who are allowed to act any way they want

It's kind of like growing up with abusive parents

I've literally never known one of these spec ops guys to show up at a high school to talk about their jobs and not be extremely tweaked

This secret service guy showed up in high school and he bragged to the class he spoke to about "disappearing" some guy in a bar that disrespected one of the Bush twins and said "he could be in Abu-Ghraib for all I know right now" or something to that effect
