I've been told that doing so is an actual major faux pas, like as a practical matter out in the civilian world it means you're blowing up their spot and drawing attention etc. they may not want Like the rule you don't salute officers in actual combat zones, but sort of reversed

Although you are still supposed to be extremely polite, "Good afternoon, sir/ma'am", etc. But that's not that different from running into a normal boss at the supermarket
