I worked in a nursing home and saw the wanton difference in treatment between residents on Medicare and privately insured residents, and... yeah, the idea that M4A is some kind of gold standard policy and not just a more ambitious compromise than most has always been weird to me.https://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1352339774821060613 …

right, that's accelerationism. forget about harm reduction; anything but the maximum goal is insufficient. (maximum goal here being m4a...which is itself a pretty limited goal and not nearly enough, but whatever...) https://twitter.com/AtlantaDfense/status/1352339460311150593 …

Also, I'm in Australia, which *has* M4A and has had since the 70s The difference is very, very clear here (Also Medicare for All hasn't *been* for all; they keep retracting coverage from outpatient services while keeping the commonly used ones funded so nobody knows)

They call it Medicare in Australia?

They don't call it Medicare *for All,* because Medicare Australia has always been sold as universal so the "for All" part was supposed to be implied, but yes, they call it Medicare They probably named it after the US thing, too. Australia is *deeply* Americanised

Huh. That's interesting, just on an etymological basis. I thought the word had no meaning anywhere else

"Medicare" as a name for Canada's single-payer system predates the US single-payer-for-retirees system by three years (1962 vs. 1965) But the word "medicare" had been around starting as a US industry term for "comprehensive health insurance" since the '50s

**five hours later** and this is why the concept "medicare" is first attested in aristotle's politics
