Still remember listening to music with friends in high school who were like "Ah yeah I used to have a whole Metallica collection on vinyl before we burned it all in that bonfire three years ago" Like that's just... a thing that happens, like bad weather

Sometimes you get in a car accident, sometimes an electrical fire breaks out in your house, sometimes a traveling preacher comes through and gets everyone all hyped up about how they need to purge all secular culture from their lives to get right with God You get used to it

Even "normal" evangelicals talk about periodic "revivals" as a positive thing, wax lyrical about a "New Great Awakening" bringing spirituality and religious passion back to America Even though every single one of these that happens has some element that's utterly fucking batshit

The mechanisms that proof one against culthood are almost identical to the mechanisms that proof one against “mainstream” evangelicalism. How can an evangelical coherently argue against a cult? “Be skeptical of weird claims”? “Be suspicious of charismatic leaders”?

The Authoritarians by Bob Altemeyer provides good insight into the hive mind that allows such beliefs to take root. It is all the more impressive that it was last updated in 2006. It still nails the Trump era and is available to download for free. https://theauthoritarians.org/

You may know this already but: the evangelicalism that the USA exported to Latin America in the last few decades is basically the cult that evangelicalism here has become.
