Everyone's gonna try to get on the bandwagon to do their own version of Cobra Kai now but I really feel The Karate Kid was uniquely a franchise you could do this with It's not like remaking a regular action franchise or sports movie franchise It has that essential goofiness

part of the key to COBRA KAI's success is that they deliver on some pretty decent fight scenes every episode like they made sure to hire actors who could handle those scenes reasonably well, the shots not muddy and blurred to hide the stunt doubles

Oh yeah It's a "deconstruction" but it's not a parody or pisstake The creators genuinely loved the original karate movie for being a karate movie and want to deliver on being a true sequel

They're trying it with the "MIGHTY DUCKS" revival - the Ducks have turned into the evil elite bully team/franchise in the interim and the new misfit/underdog team are the good guys:https://youtu.be/v-U3Umds9s4

initial reaction: this looks dire! just the level of disdain it appears to have for its carricatured enemies is... not ideal

the other thing that makes COBRA KAI tick is its genuine affection for all its characters, even when they do dumb or cruel or terrible things its insistence on seeing both danny and johnny as pretty badly traumatized guys doing their best to work through it but often screwing up

There is a fundamental difference between Johnny and Kreese, even if Danny doesn't see it initially And even though you can understand and apply empathy to how Kreese became Kreese, the show makes it very clear someone who's crossed the lines he has cannot be forgiven
