I'm sitting here weighing the idea that you could get rid of a lot of what's toxic about the word "working-class" (as well as misleading, hypocritical, inconsistent, etc.) in ordinary discourse by just committing to saying "poor" instead

Because, hilariously enough the "working-class" is "offended" when they are grouped with THOSE people ("we don't want to be compared to the homeless or welfare queens...who are the dregs of society" LOL)

Yup That's part of what's toxic about it, the proletariat vs. lumpenproletariat stuff from Marx Very old divide-and-conquer strategy, the "deserving" vs "undeserving" poor -- conservatives love to talk that way, "the Democrats represent the NON-working class"
