Darren Aranofsky should be able to make whatever goddamn movie he wants. If he drops the ball grill him, but he’s never phoned it in and I’ll take his often dunderheaded sincerity over most filmmakers clever any day of the week.

Noah, Pi, The Wrestler slapped so hard. Black Swan is derivative but still good, requiem is a movie only a teenager could love, mother! was... something that I didn’t think worked and was often grating but he’s an individual not an institution, he’s working through something.

Mother! was the least convincing cinematic metaphor I've ever seen By which I mean, the movie works so hard to make it into this big spiritual metaphor but it's obviously actually just about what it's about (an artistic dude who puts his wife last and drives her away)

A LOT of stuff is like this - it's better when you realize the metaphor is probably an excuse and it's actually just about what it's literally about Especially dudes who try to use relationships with women as this big metaphor for all of human history or whatever

(I originally developed this take as a gamer reacting to Braid, which is really stupid if it's actually supposed to be about the atom bomb or whatever but if it's just about what it's about - a dude lying to himself about how he treated his ex - it's devastating)
