I could swear I've read that "permission to speak freely" in the way it's used on TV shows and such was a myth
Yeah if you're in any kind of situation where that freely spoken opinion would be considered relevant you would already implicitly have that permission (and if you didn't, because your boss wasn't doing their job right, publicly asking for it wouldn't fix that)
This kind of thing is just grandstanding and the "permission to speak freely" thing isn't actually some kind of binding agreement to protect you from consequences for trying to call out your boss in a public meeting any more than it would be in a civilian job
Turning it into a code phrase is writers wanting to make the military simultaneously appear more and less regimented than it really is (subordinates are never allowed to give their opinion AT ALL unless they say the magic words, in which case they are protected from all harm)
(I am not a veteran, but what I've heard from hanging around veterans online trying to make my fanfic more authentic is that saying "permission to speak freely" is very Hollywood and the most you'll hear is an NCO going "meaning no disrespect" before saying something to a CO)
"permission to adjust" when you're stuck at attention and have a wardrobe malfunction is very real, however
You know that XO heard her say that and was just like "Well this is gonna be good"
Like he granted said permission 100% because it would go in the roster of stories about shitty little A1Cs to break out at the barbecue
Also, it looks like the WaPo here is trying to make @CommonAshSense sound cool and like a person with depth, rather than the shitty little A1C she actually was
Yeah I dunno, they spend a lot of time on her decision to stalk and assault her husband's ex, which is impossible to make sound good
