There's a lot of good answers to this question but basically I can't think of a better way to sum it up than that the Air Force is the only branch of the five that the likes of Milo Y could survive in It's a cautionary tale about telling young boys and girls that they're smarthttps://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1348136129589956608 …

I think most enlisted airmen are in fact smart enough to know there is a vast difference between their job and a fighter pilot's job and the whole "We're the smartest military branch" is only indirectly related

Valid point, but i really think more than a few of them enter thinking it'll be that. And I didn't even realize that was the Navy

Yeah the vast majority of the enlisted Air Force really just doesn't think about planes that often Civilians really associate the branch with flight a lot more heavily than most of its actual personnel

Yes, I know. I spent most of my life in Norfolk, VA, and have known many people in every branch of the military. I was just commenting on the irony of the Top Gun thing.

And for what it's worth, everything in the original thread here really tracks for me. Everyone I've known in the Air Force saw themselves as cynical individualists who were smarter than everyone around them, which is an extremely different culture compared to every other branch.
