There was a way to tweet this as an actually funny clapback, probably, but it needed way more workshopping in draftshttps://twitter.com/zachheltzel/status/1348081364776570881 …

njr is interesting, because i think he actually does have style--obviously, a very particular and ostentatious style, but a style nevertheless. the style is wildly at odds with the ~~proletarian~~ associations of his politics though, that's hard to argue with.

but i think it's largely because he's aligned himself with such a style-driven branch of leftism, the kind obsessed with the working-man-aesthetic, that so many people are driven to make cracks about his blazers and hats

NJR is, yes, originally from the UK, but he moved to Florida when he was five years old, has lived in the US continuously since then, and talks about how he "struggled to hold onto his accent" as a way of maintaining his identity

In other words, while a linguist might say it's problematic to say this, for all intents and purposes, his accent is fake

british heritage is a thing one can choose to hold on to

I'm just saying it's like if someone was born in Brooklyn and moved to Ohio when they were five and now as a grown adult who spent the subsequent 25 years in Ohio talks like Chick Venerra doing an impression of Joe Pesci as one of the pigeons on Animaniacs

I mean, of all the accents to "hold onto" it's this schoolboy RP affectation that would absolutely get you beat up in the UK Like when the Blue Rajah tells his mom in Mystery Men he's not just a superhero but his secret identity is "an effete English dilettante superhero"
