He names the Bad Place after the garbage dump outside Jerusalem because he's a generally very down to earth, folksy public speaker with a dark sense of humor, but I don't think that's the same as saying he was only speaking metaphorically

I mean with religion everything's kind of a metaphor but also not amirite (Trying to sum up 2000 years of theology in one sentence)

True - but I think those kinds of mythic accounts from Jesus are hard to interpret as either literal or not. Both are legitimate.

And there's some range between "metaphor for being unhappy and living a bad life" and being simply non-literal. Even the Catholic catechism on the afterlife acknowledges a fair amount of uncertainty.
