Hitler, in fact, hated the word "socialism" and resisted it - when Anton Drexler founded the party he wanted to call it the German Socialist Workers' Party but Hitler made him drop the "Socialist", so it was just the German Workers' Party (DAP)

The fact is that a lot of politically motivated working class people were attracted to the term "socialism" so Drexler felt like they had to use it - after a lot of arguing with Hitler they came up with the phrase "National Socialist" in 1920 as a compromise

But Hitler despised the Nazis who actually identified with socialism - Gregor Strasser (from whom we get the term "Strasserism") was one of the major targets of the Night of Long Knives
