This isn't actually relevant to how bad her crimes were but it does speak to right-wing mythmaking in action, like before the end of the week she'll be a fighter pilot who got the Medal of Honorhttps://twitter.com/DanLamothe/status/1347257094609711104 …

Not for nothing, but media colleagues: Please be careful before you link Ashli Babbitt's military career to the Capitol melee. Indications are that she struggled to advance up the ranks, earned no awards of consequence and left as a senior airman (E-4) after years of service.

14 years though? I'm not as familiar with the AF but in the Army (exception National Guard) if you are stuck there for that long, you're doing something very wrong

"14 year veteran" appears to be someone rounding up - the Air Force says she was four years active duty, two years reserves, six years National Guard, for a total of 12 https://twitter.com/GidgetWA/status/1347296837183541249?s=19 … https://twitter.com/GidgetWA/status/1347296837183541249?s=19 …

I was in the Navy, but from what I've heard that isn't too extraordinary in the Air Force. Army/Navy have tests and the momentum of promotion is fairly steady till E7 or so. Marines go up and down based on the whims of superiors; Air Force is slow and only by recommendation.

It's about availability (billets) within a person's AFSC, and how competitive a field it is. E.g., getting E5 as a linguist is more difficult than a similarly intelligent and ambitious person getting E5 as a supply clerk.

A dead giveaway for someone bullshitting their military service is whether they can talk about the mundane stuff they did. If they insist it was all glorious and important they're lying.

I left the USAF as an E-4 after 6 years, declining to even take the promotion test, because an extra 25-hours a week of supervisory/clerical duties is NOT worth the pay rise. Free time is much more valuable. Also, the whole institution is intolerable & I wanted no part of it.
