the past few years have really opened my eyes to why members of a feared marginalized group would call themselves "The Brotherhood of Evil [members of marginalized group]"

Would you still call it a "brotherhood" just to be ironic or mess with them or whatever

You have to, it's in the rules, but at some point you can rebrand as Legion of Doom or Hellfire Club or some other evil organization that's also got a comic book name

TBF, Hellfire Clubs actually exist. They're basically even more obnoxiously elite version of the Freemasons. Also, I believe there was an upscale BDSM sex dungeon in New York that went by the name, which is where Claremont got the idea (and the fashion sense of the "Queens")

It wasn't a real-life club, it was because Chris Claremont and John Byrne were fans of The Avengers (the '60s British spy series) and there's an episode ("A Touch of Brimstone") with a modern-day Hellfire Club

Diana Rigg made headlines with her extremely risque BDSM outfit from that episode where she infiltrates the club, and that was the inspiration for Emma Frost, who took her first name from Emma Peelpic.twitter.com/YQufnrPEiH

Mastermind's name, Jason Wyngarde, is from the bad guy in this episode being played by actor Peter Wyngarde, who was most famous for playing TV detective Jason King

Ah, I thought I recall reading one of my dad's porn mags and they had a spread on the Hellfire Club. But I didn't realize that Claremont's Hellfire Club was an homage to the Avengers.

My impression is the NY Hellfire Club was a gay club (primarily, anyway) and that's really not the vibe of the Marvel Hellfire Club
