What we call "compression" tends to involve sucking all the empty space ("ma") out of "content" and it sucks Cf. the "loudness war" when it came to music, i.e. "dynamic range compression" -- trying to make every second of a track equally loud so it "stands out" on the radio

I remember an interview with Jonny Greenwood years ago where he was asked why Radiohead albums were so short in an era of artists cramming 90 minutes of material on CDs. His response was something like “well, there’s only so much Radiohead people can take in one sitting”
