Giving someone else a fish every day is actually not that big a deal That's a fisherman's job Teaching everyone else to fish so everyone can be a fisherman is not an ideal solution There are other jobs people need to do That's how society works https://twitter.com/biancaxunise/status/1345800983385923593 …

I'd even go beyond the "give a man a fish vs teaching him to fish" parable by saying, [Can-O] Beans Dad just handed his daughter a net, pointed to the water and said: "bring back dinner, you'll get it when you're hungry enough!" You gotta show someone how the net works, first.

There's constructivist math teaching, which for me is the gold standard *when done well.* It's based on the same principle as Bean Dad, *but* requires the teacher to plan and create conditions carefully so students have supports to create their own knowledge.
-
Those conditions include a safe and trusting community of learners including peer investigators, a thoughtfully planned challenge that builds on established prior knowledge, time for discussion and reflection, and regular meals.

I’d been avoiding the thread because something something being halfway responsible about triggers but the fact that that was the excuse/structure has filtered over to my tl and I’m genuinely angry about that in itself now
-
“This must have been the best available option of what was on the table at the time so what does that table look like” is more than a fun intellectual exercise, it’s how and why I care about history, and it’s also something you do AFTER EATING THE BRAIN FUEL FOODS TO THINK WITH
