This is absolutely partly because this is the kind of thing that "shouldn't be hard" so it didn't trigger the realization that he may have been asking too much in that moment Which is absolutely tied to ableism and neurodivergence https://twitter.com/koshersemite/status/1345925005692067840 …

THIS! I was seriously like, if you KNOW your daughter doesn't have those skills, what were you trying to prove? That if you bully her enough it will force her to twist herself into a knot?

plus it's just a stupid fucking can opener. gods above you learn how to use it one time then you just use the fucking thing to open cans for the rest of your life. It has almost nothing to do with cooking. I cook a ton, I have zero recollection of the day I learned to can open.

Not to mention can openers are not intuitive tools to use. I can figure out a fork or chopsticks if I haven't used them before, or maybe even if I haven't seen them used but have heard what they're for. Can openers do require a bit of instruction.

I could even use a fork and knife or chopsticks in a way that's "wrong" but still gets the job done. I've jabbed sushi with one chopstick and made a kebab before. But there's only one way to use a can opener.

I actually read about someone doing exactly that to their kid in a Reader's Digest at my grandmother's house in the late 80s/early 90s, lest anyone think this analogy is far-fetched.
