Like they said that that Into the Wild guy wasn't even in that dangerous or barren a part of the wilderness He created his own challenge by going out there totally ignorant without any help He had dozens of options for not starving to death he just didn't know about

Last I heard the plant he ate was actually food, it was just that years later the found out it can be toxic if you're already starving.

my own backpacking experience says this is 110% true. a calm head and expertise will carry you through quite a lot of Bad Weather. fancy-ass gear and bad decisions will get you killed by a light rain.

True. Also, how does one live through a plague where people started to make their own masks in the interest of public health and not come to the conclusion that sewing/textile knowledge is likely a more fundamental life skill than knowing how to use a can opener.
