I agree with all of this, but I guess I'm left with the question of whether it's ever a valuable experience to try to figure something out for oneself even if the technical knowledge already exists & is written down somewhere?

It is, if you enjoy doing it and you think it's the kind of thing you'd be good at It's not something to be pushed into against your will when you're already hungry and frustrated and you know you're not a "technically oriented person"
