See, I've come to see one of the traits I used to be most sensitive about as a kid, my laziness and sloth, as my saving grace A younger version of me COULD have ended up being Can Opener Dad out of some headass performative desire to be a Yoda-like mentor, but I'd be too lazy

"Laziness" is just people's word for you not wanting to invest energy and effort into something that they think is worthwhile (or you claim to think is worthwhile) and that you actually, deep down, do not think is worthwhile

And people should listen to that inner voice more than they do honestly He talks about teaching resilience and dedication like these are inherently virtues Like "Why won't you just stop and ask someone for directions" isn't a cliché

If the game is too hard and you're not enjoying it then just look up the answer on YouTube Look up the ending on YouTube Stop playing the game altogether and do something else Who gives a shit Christ, life is too short for this bullshit

People act like you get some transcendent spiritual reward for sticking with stupid problems until you solve them "on your own", some joy or inner peace Or that this is a vital skill that will serve you well when your plane crashes on a distant island or something

Or that life is like an RPG and "building character" is a skill that levels up generally so being the guy who laboriously tries to figure out how to do your own plumbing and causes hundreds of dollars worth of damage to your pipes will eventually make you a wealthy entrepreneur

Uncle Arthur is here to tell you that what my life experience teaches me is that you will never get some reward from the isekai writers of the universe where you end up on an island needing to solve puzzles and shit The world is not actually set up to reward "building character"

*My* hardass tough love "I just want you to know what you need to know" lesson to my kids would be that life is hard enough, in ways none of us can do anything about, and anything that makes it easier is fine Shortcuts and laziness and "taking the easy way out" are good

We are all taking the easy way out, unless you hunted and gathered your own food (and even then you're just taking advantage of the bounty of Mother Earth that fell into your lap, you didn't create the ecosystem you were born into)

"Relying on other people to do things for you" is okay It's how society works, it's the definition of what society is

I like reinventing the wheel because I feel too stupid to invent a new kind of motor. True story.

I've gotten dinged at work for not asking for help quickly enough and wasting time as a result.
