This is an obvious logical consequence of the fact that 1) having kids is very easy and there's no real barriers to becoming a parent if you want up, 2) a lot of people are just really bad human beings People try to make these two things not true but they obviously arehttps://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1345650295649525766 …

I'm pretty sure I'd be a terrible parent, so I don't have kids. I get called selfish for this all the time.

People are strange. That's EXACTLY the right attitude to have! I always tell people, if you can live without kids, do so.

Maybe we need some guidance for shit like how to talk about the death of pets or whatever, but there are lots of books on the subject in general. And all parenting boils down to is: don't be an asshole. Not much of a thesis to base a manual on, I guess.

The thing is, and I can say this as a new parent, there are actually quite a few manuals on the subject. And despite there being differences in advice and in children they're all pretty clear that kids learn best when parents are involved in developing skills

Letting a kid flail about, and hungry, while you are emotionally detached or whatever is kind of the opposite of what you're supposed to do.

People who say that are the kinds of people who don't read manuals until and unless they get stuck, and then they blame the manufacturer for unintuitive design.
