Yeah, although I mean, to some extent, that's just the overall argument against democracy, right? Squabbling politicians and base masses, while nobody is actually willing to be in charge.

Of course, for all fascists make that argument (generally), almost none of them in the West have used the pandemic as a way to augment their power, or fight it for cynical reasons.

To be fair, thus far, every nation on Earth has been shit at responding to climate change in a manner that befits the scale of the threat.

i've heard it argued that the best predictor of good covid response was whether the country went through sars/mers in a serious way which rather bolsters your point

I think we also have to accept US culture has a not insubstantial amount to do with it. Our "screw you I'll do what I want" cultural mentality and rugged individualism makes the kind of collective work necessary here not compute for a lot of folks.

Nevermind the racism and ableism that made a whole bunch of people not care the minute they found out who the most impacted individuals were.

I'm not sure how it's the form of government that is deficient rather than the people who vote in or government those democracies. Obama, Geo. W. Bush, B. Clinton, GHW Bush would have done a much better job, as would have President H. Clinton, Romney, McCain, Gore or Kerry.
