Arthur Chu added,
Me and my siblings used to play so that we just bought the properties we landed on and pootled round the board paying each other rent and getting by, and then our mum would step in and pressure us to swap properties with each other so we could start building houses
It's possibly not a coincidence that we turned out to be pretty left wing and she is rather right wing. We don't talk much
One of the big ways Monopoly's official rules differ from how most kids play it is that (as a simulation of real life capitalism) you can't just leave property unclaimed
When you land on a space you get first dibs to buy it, but if you choose not to or you can't afford it it goes up for auction This means monopolies start forming a lot faster than in a game where spaces can just stay unbought
We did use that rule, but left to ourselves we made no effort to get three the same colour so she had to force our hand
Yeah I mean The original Landlord's Game was intended to make a point, and explicitly had one phase where you play competitively and one where you play cooperatively
