Hey, hot take: Someone going right up to you online and telling you "I think you're a mass murderer with blood on your hands, and you should be ashamed of yourself for helping kill all those innocent people" is not a normal situation You shouldn't be expected to react normally
It's not a legal defense against assault charges on the part of the person committing the assault but it does make the speech act in question unprotected under the First Amendment and an act that can itself be punished by the government

My understanding is that the Supreme Court has spent the last 50 years narrowing the scope of "fighting words" to the point where it's not clear that anything actually qualifies as fighting words.

No. The words have to convey a threat of imminent physical violence or a challenge to fight. Calling you a liar or demanding a retraction doesn’t qualify as “fighting words” or make the statement unprotected by the first amendment.
