I just think it's extremely obvious - without getting into the content of the posts at all! - that most of the content of the sub is fiction Once it became well known that it was a way to go viral and get lots of attention, it couldn't possibly be anything elsehttps://twitter.com/Nymphomachy/status/1343000164378689537 …

Heard the argument that AITA posts describe stuff that happens frequently enough IRL that it doesn't matter if they're real or just creative writing exercises, and as somebody who has lived through dozens of things that WOULD warrant an actual AITA post, I... don't agree (1/2)

Yeah, that's likely accurate. I think a lot of the other ones are things that happened in the semi-recent past of the OP, where there's still an axe to grind, and where the OP is writing it from the perspective of the person who was an asshole to them.

But the genre requires the audience ot at least INTERACT with it as though it's true. Which means that a part of it is that you get to ask follow up questions, and theroetically, more things will happen.

One of the things I consider the most obvious "tell" of a fake story is when the OP lacks a major detail that the author then drops in the followup comments Like you don't even find out the worst thing the boyfriend did until someone grills him about it

This usually gets a lot of responses about "Wow such a lack of self awareness" but it's just as likely that the actual writer didn't even think of the detail that would make everything worse until questioned about it and couldn't resist throwing it in

Yeah - I mean, ultimately it makes it a genre not completely unlike improv, which also wouldn't work if it was scripted out ahead of time.

This is a common enough feature of improvisatory storytelling (ie bullshitting) that Asimov used it as the giveaway for one of his whodunits ("If the way he died was as dramatic as being struck by lightning there's no way you wouldn't have said that first")

The thing is, that storytelling is also fun, at least when the stakes are low enough. It might start around reality, but quickly just go to delight the audience. But audiences like to be delighted! That's OK.
